The Untold Story of Rahab: A Journey of Faith and Redemption
In the heart of chapter 2 of The Book of Joshua, we find a story like no other. This is a tale that defies expectations and breaks barriers, centering around Rahab, a woman whose past labeled her as a prostitute. Yet, her actions would redefine her as a symbol of courage and faith. What makes her journey so extraordinary? Stick around, because this is a tale of bravery that will challenge everything you think you know.
Rahab’s Daring Choice
Picture this moment unfolding right before your eyes: someone is pounding on Rahab’s rough wooden door. She knew it was the king’s soldiers, and she knew what she had done. They would break it down if she didn’t open the door soon. Fear gripped her heart. She had known this might happen, but a secret this big couldn’t stay hidden. Someone must have seen something, and someone might have reported her.
Her thoughts went to the two men hidden under stalks of flax on her flat rooftop. Maybe the soldiers wouldn’t look there, but if they did, she shuddered at what might happen. She moved towards the door, trying to appear calm despite her heart racing. Death seemed to surround her; there were no good choices. If she betrayed the two men, the king might reward her, but the Israelite army across the river was about to invade her city. They would leave no survivors.
The men on her roof were spies sent by Joshua, the successor to Moses who led the Israelite army. If these spies were found, they would be killed, and she would be accused of treason. She weighed her options: risk her life now and hope for mercy from the spies later, or save her life now and lose it when the invaders came.
The Power of Faith
Stories of God’s victory had echoed throughout Canaan. The god of the Israelites had destroyed the most powerful nation on Earth, parted the Red Sea, and kept the Israelites alive in the wilderness for 40 years. Now, God promised the Israelites that Canaan would be their new home, starting with her city.
Fear filled the city, but the king was determined to fight. Deserters would be killed. Rahab knew she would be killed if they found out what she had done. Yet, while the city feared, something else stirred in Rahab’s heart. Her eyes went to the idols in her home; they seemed powerless compared to what she had heard about Israel’s God. The incense that once comforted her now made her sick. She decided she would serve Israel’s God.
Rahab’s Bold Action
Earlier, when she opened her door to the two men, they quickly explained they were spies from the army across the river and needed help. Rahab realized her chance had come. It wouldn’t come again. Now was the time. Putting on a brave smile, Rahab opened the door. An officer and two soldiers stood there, swords drawn.
He demanded she hand over the two men. She calmly lied, saying the men had come to use her services and then left. She told the officer she had seen them leave the city just before the gates closed and urged them to pursue the spies. The officer, who had visited Rahab many times, believed her and sent his men toward the gates.
A Woman of Courage
Rahab’s story is an incredible tale of faith, courage, and God’s plan. Despite being a Canaanite, Rahab had heard about the mighty deeds of Israel’s God and believed in His power. She took a huge risk by hiding the spies in her home. She thought about the facts—the Egyptian disaster, the Red Sea miracle, and survival in the wilderness. These were not just rumors.
Today, Christians are God’s people. Following Jesus takes courage. Jesus never made an emotional appeal to followers; He told people to follow Him and to count the cost. Following Christ can be risky and costly. People have lost family, friends, jobs, and even their lives for Jesus all across the world, even to this day. Like Rahab, many believers have risked everything to join God’s people.
Overcoming the Past
Don’t let your past hold you back. Rahab was an idol worshipper and a prostitute, yet she longed to be with the living holy God. God saw her, loved her, and gave her a chance to leave her past behind and join His people. He will do the same for you. The only thing that can separate you from God’s love is a hardened heart that refuses to repent and come to Him.
Have you joined Jesus and the Christian family? If not, search for the truth and weigh the facts. This might be your only chance. What will you do?
The Promise of Protection
But Rahab’s story wasn’t over. She climbed to her roof where the spies were hiding. She had helped them without conditions, hoping they would return her kindness. But was that too much to hope for? Who was she really—a harlot who worshipped cruel gods? These men served a holy God; would they despise her?
When the men came out from under the flax, Rahab asked them to spare her family when the invasion came. The spies didn’t hesitate; they promised that anyone in her home would be spared. If anyone in Rahab’s home was harmed, they would forfeit their own lives. Joy filled Rahab’s heart; she could save her entire family, and she did.
Lessons from Rahab’s Life
Is this just an old story with no relevance today? Ask the Christians during World War II who hid Jews in their basements when the Nazis came. Some gave up, some stood firm, and some died. Opportunities will come in everyone’s life to show courage. How will we respond?
One roadblock we all face is seeing the world unrealistically. We wish everything were black and white. Some things are, but in reality, there can be a lot of gray. Rahab lied to save the spies’ lives. Some criticize her for lying, saying she should have told the truth and left the consequences to God. If she had, those men would have died. God would have seen that as treachery, not faith.
Faith in Action
Rahab had only one choice: lie convincingly or surrender the spies and lose her place among God’s people. God commends Rahab’s faith in the New Testament, including naming her among the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11. He never condemns her method. We are Christians living in a sinful world, trying to glorify God and expand His kingdom. What do we do when there are no clear choices?
Situational ethics says nothing is right or wrong; just do what feels right. When making decisions, we must prioritize God’s kingdom above our own interests or pride. In Rahab’s case, a principle emerges: evil men with evil purposes have no right to the truth. In everyday life, truth is the only option. Evil does exist; it’s all around us. We all sin and fall short of perfection. We live in a world where evil exists, and we must choose to make God-honoring choices in our lives.
Reflecting on Rahab’s Legacy
How do you think Rahab should have responded to the situation she was in? What choices have you made regarding serving God or serving the world we live in? Just like that, our story of Rahab—a woman of great courage and faith—comes to an end. But there’s so much more to her story than what we’ve explored today.
Imagine what other hidden stories the Bible holds—stories of bravery, redemption, and transformation. Stories like Rahab’s can change the way we see faith.
